Dewsbury Junction with Dewsbury Arm to the Right
Saville Town Basin (Dewsbury)
13 Miles & 12 locks
7 Hours Cruising including Return Trip.
Travel upstream and having passed Broadcut continue along the canal towards Horbury Bridge where there is the figure of three locks which despite their name is actually only two locks. From here continue on upwards passing through another lock before shortly arriving at Dewsbury junction. Either turn here or head down into Saville town basin and turn round there if time allows. With a long stretch of canal and several manual locks this is an ideal trip for those looking to learn how to steer the boat and how to operate locks.
15 Miles & 8 locks
7 1/2 Hours Cruising including Return Trip.
Head downstream passing Stanley ferry and its aqueducts before arriving at Birkwood lock which like all the other locks on this canal is an electric lock operated through the push of a button. Having passed through here continue onwards passing the outskirts of Altofts and through two more electric locks. From here the canal re-joins the river for the final stretch to Castleford. Upon arriving at Castleford junction you can either turn round on the river or head into the basin where there is full facilities block and plenty of space to moor up for a bite to eat if time allows. An ideal trip for younger groups such as beavers and cubs as it provides an opportunity to learn how locks work without having to manually open the gates & sluices etc.
