Please scroll down to find out more about our weekend routes:

Cooper Bridge Junction

Start of Huddersfield

Broad Canal - Lock No. 1

31 Miles & 42 locks

1 Weekends Cruise

After heading upstream towards Dewsbury, this time continue through Thornhill Double locks followed by two more locks to arrive at Shepley Bridge Marina. Here there is a facilities block with toilet and elsan disposal. A short cruise from here is Mirfield which has a Lidl next to the canal so an ideal place to stop for a short break and top up with supplies. From here continue on through two more locks to arrive at copper bridge junction. At this point the Calder and Hebble navigation continues upwards to the right and to the left is the start of the Huddersfield broad canal. Take this left turn to join the Huddersfield Broad Canal and continue through 9 manual locks as the canal weaves through the suburbs of Huddersfield. Approaching the centre of Huddersfield there is Turnbridge Lift Bridge to operate and just beyond is Aspley Basin. Here there is plenty of mooring space for an overnight stop with access to a facilities block with toilets and showers. A full weekend’s cruise with lots of opportunities to learn how to steer the boat and plenty of locks to operate including some double locks.

29 Miles & 32 locks

1 Weekends Cruise

Head upstream initially following the same route as the Huddersfield trip, passing Dewsbury and Mirfield to arrive at Cooper Bridge junction. This time keep right to stay on the Calder and Hebble navigation and continue along the river to Kirklees bottom lock where the route briefly leaves the river to re-join the canal. Shortly after is Kirkless top lock and just beyond is Anchor Pit flood lock where the canal re-joins the river for the last leg to Brighouse. Approaching Brighouse, leave the river at Brighouse bottom lock and then continue through Brighouse Top lock to arrive at Brighouse Basin where there is overnight moorings and a facilities block with toilet and elsan disposal. A full weekend’s cruise with lots of opportunities to learn how to steer the boat and plenty of locks to operate but not quite as many as the Huddersfield trip.

Leeds - Royal Armouries/Clarence Dock

35 Miles & 18 locks

1 Weekends Cruise

Head downstream following the Castleford route  passed Stanley ferry and Altofts to  Castleford junction. This time take the left turn just before the entrance to Castleford basin and head upstream onto the river Aire. Shortly after pass Allerton Bywater and continue along the river to Lemonroyd lock where the route leaves the river to join the canal. Just beyond is Lemonroyd marina and from here continue upwards through 3 more electric locks, passing Woodlesford along the way which has a Lidl a short walk from the canal if a stock up is required. Just above the 4th lock the canal re-joins the river for the last leg into Leeds where shortly after are full facilities including toilets and elsan disposal. A short cruise from here is Leeds lock and located next to the lock is the Royal Armouries museum which is well worth a visit. A few metres from the lock is  the entrance to Clarence Dock where there are visitor moorings. Overnight mooring in Leeds city centre is limited so after visiting the Royal armouries it is recommended to head back down towards Castleford and either mooring overnight at Woodlesford or near Lemonroyd marina. A full weekends cruise but with sufficient time to visit Royal Armouries museum. There is also Thwaites mill at Stourton, Woodlesford nature reserve & St Aidan’s Country Park at Allerton Bywater which are also all worth a visit if time allows. An ideal trip for cubs and with several electric locks to operate there are plenty opportunities to learn how locks work.

Approaching Lemonroyd Lock

Sowerby Bridge

41 Miles & 52 locks

3 Days Cruise

Follow the Calder & Hebble navigation upstream following the same route as the Brighouse trip but after arriving in Brighouse continue along the canal through more manual locks to Elland. Just after is Salterhebble Locks, a set of three locks with the bottom lock being an electric guillotine lock. After the middle lock there are full facilities including toilets, elsan disposal, water point & general waste bins. Above the top lock the canal turns left and to the right is the former Halifax branch which is now closed. From here continue for approximately ½ an hour to arrive in Sowerby Bridge which marks the end of the Calder & Hebble navigation and the start of the Rochdale canal. There are plenty of morning spaces for either a short break or an overnight stop with access to full facilities including toilets. A short walk from here is Tuel lane lock which at 6 metre (19ft 6 inch) deep is the deepest lock in UK. This route does not include travel through this lock but it is well worth a look at and you may even see another boat going through. Adjacent to the moorings is Sowerby bridge wharf which has undergone major refurbishment in recent years and is home to Shire Cruisers along with many other businesses including restaurants and coffee shops. There are lots of shops including a supermarket in Sowerby Bridge so an ideal place to take a short break and go for a walk around. A 3 day cruise with lots of locks but includes plenty of time to take a break and walk around Sowerby Bridge. Ideal for groups who are looking to travel further than on weekend but without going for a full week.
