Afternoon/Evening Routes

Stanley Ferry

Stanley Ferry

6 Miles & 2 locks

3 Hours Cruising including return trip.

Leaving Wakefield city centre head downstream through Fall Ing's lock onto the Air & Calder Navigation. Continue along the river, passing the entrance of the former Barnsley canal which closed in 1953. A short while later leave the river and pass through Broadreach flood lock. Just beyond is Ramsden's Swing Bridge and Stanley Ferry where there are two aqueducts side by side. Aqueducts are used to carry one body of water over another and here it is used to carry the canal over the river Calder. There are plenty of moorings and a facilities block with toilets and showers. An easy and very enjoyable route which travels through both urban and rural scenery.
